Hands an Collage
Essential question: Understanding how to draw hands, what do we know of the anatomy of hands?
How will we know if they’ve learned it?
Students will have a final masterpiece and the skills to create other works if necessary at a more advanced level.
What will we do if they don’t learn it?
Students will be re-taught and can utilized videos to re-work missing elements of their assignment.
What will we do if they have / have already learned?
Students can always go above and beyond the instructions to create a more challenging experience.
My students understand and can… by the end of the lesson
Students will have extensive knowledge of the anatomy of the hand, how to break down the form into shapes to better understand the relationship of human anatomy
Teks: 117.C Foundations: observation and perception. The student develops and expands visual literacy skills using critical thinking, imagination, and the senses to observe and explore the world by learning about, understanding, and applying the elements of art, principles of design, and expressive qualities. The student uses what the student sees, knows, and has experienced as sources for examining, understanding, and creating original artwork. The student is expected to: (A) consider concepts and ideas from direct observation, original sources, experiences, and imagination for original artwork;

You will need these supplies:
  • cardboard
  • newspaper
  • color drawing paper or construction paper
  • pencils of varying lead
  • thin and fat sharpie
  • rubber cement
  • white color pencil
  • brown watercolor paint and a med size paintbrush

After watching the videos and completing the technique sheets on basic drawing of the hand you will complete the following:
Using a large piece of cardboard as the background tear strips of newspaper, and drawing paper. Arrange them in various spaces leaving the cardboard exposed. You can even tear the cardboard exposing the corrugation in small areas.
Draw in pencil a min of four hands either interacting with with each other or interacting with an object (like a pencil)
Next Use color pencil, marker, watercolor to create value. Note: everytime the paper changes, the medium changes.

Collage hands Rubric:
  • 20pts anatomy of the hands are correct
  • 30pts effective use of value showing shadows
  • 30pts the medium changes every time you are on a new surface. Example: So if you are on a section of newspaper and use pencil and it changes to a colored drawing surface then us sharpie or color pencil.
  • 20pts Craftsmanship, the work is complete, not rushed, not sloppy and the intent to create a solid finished piece is evident.
