Hanging still life Grissel painting
Supplies needed:
- Flat canvas board size:
- ruler
- pencil
- camera or phone
- black and white acrylic paint
- round and flat acrylic paint brushes small, med and large
- Plastic paint pallet the seals or put the pallet in a ziplock bag
- A bowl to put water in and paper towels
- (optional) glaze for acrylic, this can extent the life of your paint
Essential question: What is grizzelle painting and why are we studying it? How will you arrange your still life to reflect you personal choice and create value in a chiaroscuro style?
How will we know if they’ve learned it?
Students will have a painting based off of old masters techniques.
What will we do if they don’t learn it?
Students will be re-taught and can utilized videos to re-work missing elements of their assignment.
What will we do if they have / have already learned?
Students can always go above and beyond the instructions to create a more challenging experience.

Grading Rubric:
- 10pts: Thumbnail sketches are well thought out and planned.
- 20pts: creating a composition that is well light, shadows are evident and there is high contrast in the photo as well as the painting
- 20pts: Paint is applied with thought and is not sloppy
- 20pts: craftsmanship is evident, no edges that expose the canvas
- 10pts: The object is not centered and establishes balance.
- 20pts: Object fills the space and there is not any wasted or dead space
- Remember that you will turn the canvas in person, you can drop it off at the school. AND you will upload the work to schoology as well.
